UNDER- AND OVERACTIVE THYROID

Women tend to have more thyroid problems. In men, the clinical picture of thyroid diseases is considerably less clear.

The most widely known thyroid function disorders are underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism, in which case the body produces too few thyroid hormones, and overactive thyroid or hyperthyroidism, in which case the body produces too many thyroid hormones.

The thyroid panel is recommended in case of a suspected under- or overactive thyroid.

In case of an underactive thyroid, the body’s metabolism slows down.
Common underactive thyroid symptoms include:

  • High cholesterol

  • Irregular menstrual cycle in women

In case of an overactive thyroid, the body’s metabolism increases.
Common overactive thyroid symptoms include:

  • Nervousness, irritability (crying easily)
  • Insomnia, excessive tiredness
  • Hand tremors
  • Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting
  • Weight loss
  • Heart palpitation, fast pulse
