In up to 75% of cases, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are asymptomatic. The symptoms of several disease overlap and different infectious agents may co-occur. Thus, without taking a test, a person may not know that he or she is infected and could spread the disease to others. Therefore, it is recommended to test for infectious agents of certain sexually transmitted diseases together.
The sexually transmitted diseases panel (STD panel) consists of tests for infectious agents of four most common sexually transmitted diseases (chlamydia, incl. LGV, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis, mycoplasmosis), which can be determined from the first urine in the morning in men and vaginal swab in women. In nearly 25% of cases, the infectious agent can be detected from throat or rectal swab instead. In case of men having sexual relations with men, in 90% of cases the infectious agent is there; it may thus be necessary to collect a sample and test for these areas as well.
Sexually transmitted diseases have an incubation period, which must be accounted for – this is a period of time when you have been infected, but the test result may not yet indicate it. We recommend taking the STD package test approximately 2 weeks after possible infection, or when symptoms occur.
A positive test result indicates that the infectious agent is present in the sample material. In case of a positive result, it is necessary to consult a physician (e.g., a men’s health doctor, gynaecologist) for appropriate treatment.
The result reflects the current situation; if a later infection is suspected, the test should be repeated. To interpret the test results, a lab doctor’s or other healthcare practitioner’s explanations may be necessary; if you have any questions, we recommend ordering an additional lab doctor’s (clinical microbiologist’s) consultation.
