- The main source of energy for the body
- High values may indicate diabetes
- Low values occur less frequently and indicate a deficiency in carbohydrates consumed with food or hormonal system malfunction
The glucose level in blood is regulated by hormones: insulin, glucagon, adrenalin, cortisol and growth hormone. Intense physical activity, stress, burns and infections may contribute to a physiological increase in blood glucose levels.
After an ordinary meal, the pre-meal glucose level is restored within 2-4 hours.
High values indicate diabetes. Low values may occur when the amount of carbohydrates consumed with food is not compatible with physical exercise.
Since the result of the test is directly affected by food intake, it is important to refrain from eating and drinking 10-14 hours before giving blood.
