SYNLAB now offers the possibility to detect two coronavirus antibodies: type IgG and type IgM antibodies, which are combined in the package of coronavirus antibodies.

The sample material is venous blood.

The package of coronavirus antibodies is not suitable for an initial coronavirus diagnosis but rather to confirm that you have had COVID-19 already. In case of a suspected infection, a nasopharyngeal PCR test is preferred.

After you have had coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, antiviral antibodies are produced in your blood, which indicate the immune response to the virus. With the help of the tests included in the package, it is possible to detect whether your body has developed various antibodies to the coronavirus, i.e. whether you have had the disease.

IgG antibodies are produced in infected individuals 2-3 weeks after the onset of symptoms. A positive result indicates that you have had the COVID-19 disease or are in the late stage of it.

IgM antibodies usually precede IgG antibodies and persist for a shorter time. A positive IgM result in particular indicates recent exposure to the virus.

The detection of IgM and IgG antibodies together allows for a more accurate assessment of immune status compared to the detection of a single antibody.

The sample used for the analysis of antibodies is venous blood, which means that the test does not require you not to eat or drink beforehand. When you come to get tested, it is mandatory to wear a face mask.

You will receive the result of the analysis within 1 working day. The sample provider can view the results on the patient portal minu.synlab.ee and the results are also available on digilugu.ee. In both environments, it is necessary to log in with an ID card, Mobile ID or Smart-ID. If necessary, you can come to a SYNLAB blood collection point and the result will be printed out for you.

Reference value: negative

The results of a package can be of four types. Based on existing research on the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, the results can be interpreted as follows:

  1. Both IgG and IgM are negative

This means that there are no antibodies against the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Therefore, the analysis cannot confirm if you have had COVID-19 or not. An early stage of infection cannot be ruled out (1-2 weeks) when antibodies are yet to develop. In addition, some people do not develop antibodies (especially asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic and immunocompromised patients). After you have had the virus, levels of antibodies may fall over time, which may affect the test result.

  1. Both IgG and IgM are positive

If both coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 antibodies are present, they indicate recent COVID-19 disease, recent exposure to the coronavirus or an active COVID-19 infection at the time of analysis.

  1. Positive IgM and negative IgG

If only a type IgM antibody is positive, it may indicate recent COVID-19 disease or exposure to the coronavirus, but does not confirm falling ill. In the case of such a result, please contact your family doctor, who will decide on further treatment. If necessary, we recommend a nasopharyngeal PCR test as an additional test.

  1. Negative IgM and positive IgG

If only the IgG antibody is positive, it indicates that you have had COVID-19 or are in the late stage of it (from week 2 onwards).

 

About the virus

Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 causes a viral disease of the lower respiratory tract called COVID-19, the symptoms of which are fever, cough, difficulty breathing, etc. The virus is known to spread by infected droplets and on surfaces. Symptoms usually appear within 14 days, but not all people develop symptoms. People who are infected but do not show any symptoms are at high risk of spreading the virus. Getting infected with the virus is particularly dangerous for the elderly and for people with chronic illnesses, as their immune system is weaker and may not cope as well as that of an average healthy person.
