1. Why should I get tested for HPV?

Genital HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the world, affecting up to 75% of women who have had an active sex life. More than 500,000 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed worldwide each year. More than 90% of these cases are directly linked to previous infection with high-risk HPV, which causes malignant cell division and proliferation. In the early stages of cervical cancer, there are no specific signs of the disease; later, there may be a lot of white discharge, sometimes mixed with blood, bleeding in the middle of the menstrual cycle, contact bleeding during sexual intercourse and pain.

Cervical cancer risk analysis (HPV) is recommended for women who have not participated in a national HPV screening programme and/or want to test themselves quickly when they have a new partner.

It is recommended that women aged 30 and older repeat the high-risk HPV test every 5 years.

3. When is the right time to test myself for HPV to obtain reliable results?

You can be tested for HPV at any time, based on your lifestyle and sexual activity. According to the guidelines approved by Estonian gynaecologists, you should get tested for HPV every 5 years.

The sample should not be taken:

  • during menstruation
  • after sexual intercourse (we advise giving the sample 2 days after the last sexual intercourse)

  • collection of a sample should be avoided in a situation where a visit to a gynaecologist has taken place in the last 30 days and a vaginal or cervical sample was taken

We recommend that you see a gynaecologist as soon as possible (you will find a list of SYNLAB recommended gynaecologists in the analysis submenu).
